Rathlin West Lighthouse is a lighthouse in the northwest of the Northern Irish island of Rathlin in the townland of Kebble . It marks the transition from the North Atlantic to the North Canal for maritime shipping .
Rathlin West is one of the most extraordinary lighthouses, because the actual beacon is located at the foot of the structure. It was erected on a rock face at a height of 62 meters over a three-year period . Construction costs, which were particularly high at the time, amounted to £ 400,000 . Although the lighthouse was completed at the end of 1916, the commissioning of the lighthouse was not officially announced until March 10, 1919.
Rathlin West Lighthouse is operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights . The station has not been manned since November 30, 1983 and the automated beacon is monitored by Rathlin East Lighthouse . From 1925 to 1995 the station was also equipped with a fog horn .
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds operates an observation station in the immediate vicinity of the lighthouse.
