Serhiy Hajduk

Serhij Anatolijowytsch Hajduk , ( Ukrainian Сергій Анатолійович Гайдук ; born July 25, 1963 in Dnipropetrovsk ) is a Ukrainian naval officer with the rank of vice admiral . From 2014 to 2016 he was Commander in Chief of the Ukrainian Navy .

Hajduk was promoted to Rear Admiral on December 5, 2011. He was appointed commander in chief on March 2, 2014 after his predecessor Denys Berezovsky defected to the pro-Russian regional government of Crimea on the same day after only one day in office. In 2003 Hajduk was awarded the Medal for Military Service in Ukraine for “exemplary fulfillment of duty” .

On March 3, 2014, Berezovskyi went to high-ranking officers of the Ukrainian navy together with Russian military personnel in order to induce them to serve in the Russian armed forces with the promise of high remuneration . After a speech by Hajduk, all the admirals refused and started singing the Ukrainian anthem .

In several actions by pro-Russian security forces in the republic of Crimea , which is controversial under international law , the abandonment of three military bases of the Ukrainian armed forces was forced. In addition to the bases in Bakhchysarai and Nowooserne , the naval headquarters in Sevastopol was also taken. Some Ukrainian soldiers defected. Hajduk was temporarily arrested but released on March 20, 2014 not far from the village of Chonhar . The Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had previously asked the authorities of the Republic of Crimea to allow him to leave the Republic of Crimea because, according to Shoigu, "Hajduk was unable to follow the orders of his superiors".
