Temelín depot

The Temelín Depot (also known as the Temelín hoard ) is a depot find of the Early Bronze Age Aunjetitz culture from Temelín in Jihočeský kraj , Czech Republic . It dates to between 1800 and 1600 BC. Today the depot is divided between the National Museum in Prague , the Museum in Týn nad Vltavou and the Prehistoric Institute of Charles University in Prague .

Find history

The depot was discovered in 1913 or 1914 southeast of Temelín during renovation work. The site is in flat terrain in the area of ​​a spring that has now dried up. To the east of this is a Bronze Age to Iron Age barrow field with originally around 300–400 burials. The Křtěnov depot at the same time was found in the vicinity in 1884 .

composition

The depot consists of 88 bronze bars that have been preserved either completely or as larger fragments. There are also four small broken ends, of which it is unclear whether they belong to two, three or four bars. The length of the bars is between 150 mm and 288 mm. They weigh between 50 g and 99 g, with most specimens weighing between 60 g and 70 g. The total weight of the finds is 6.3 kg. Today there are 77 ingots and the four broken ends in the National Museum in Prague, two ingots in the Prehistoric Institute and nine in Týn nad Vltavou.
