The Calamari Wrestler ( Japanese い か レ ス ラ ー , Ika resurā for Japanese / English Ika Wrestler ) is a Japanese feature film from 2004.

action

Taguchi is a Japanese wrestler . Just as he has won the championship fight and received the winner's belt, it is torn from him by an octopus while in the ring. In the subsequent fight against the Calmar , he is struck down by this. Taguchi can't get over the humiliation and tries to defeat the squid in a fight.

The managers of the wrestling association are trying to make this the new star of their league. The octopus refuses to accept the conditions and to lose in a fake fight. More and more crystallized out that the squid is a reincarnation is Kan-Ichi, the former training partner of Taguchi and former fiancee now Taguchi's fiancé Miyako. He retired from sport years ago due to a serious illness.

Miyako starts an affair with the octopus, which turns it back into Kan-Ichi. Only through a ritual in a Buddhist temple can it be transformed back into the mollusc. When he stands in the ring to fight Taguchi, he has to discover that he has turned into an octopus through a ritual. However, Kan-Ichi (the Calmar) can win the fight. A short time later, while shopping with Miyako, he is knocked down by a crab, which calls on him to fight in the ring.

In the decisive battle, the great combative superiority of the crab becomes apparent. At the last moment, however, the squid succeeds in tearing off the crab's arms and defeating it. She then turns into Godozan, the great master of sport who allegedly died four decades ago. He explains that he is the father of Kan-Ichi (who is now human again) and Taguchi and that both are brothers.

criticism

“Definitely" trashy "fantasy comedy. A strangely absurd melodramatic entertainment, which the actors and directors, however, take seriously. "
