The Eispeter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eispeter is one of the early picture stories of the humorous poet and draftsman Wilhelm Busch . It appeared in 1864 in the Bilderpossen , the first independent publication by Wilhelm Busch, who in the previous years had only drawn picture stories for the Fliegende Blätter and the Münchener Bilderbogen . The story varies the theme of classic Enlightenment pedagogy, but at the same time alienates it in a special way.

content

Peter is a boy who leaves the narrow room of his parents, who are warming themselves by the stove. The father is equipped with a dressing gown, pointed cap and a long pipe. The mother is sitting by the stove in her apron and work clothes. Against the warning of his uncle, who is a forester, he goes on ice with his skates. It collapses and freezes into a block of ice that is carried home and placed by the stove and melts completely. The parents have no choice but to put their son in a saucepan and lie down between the cucumber and cheese to rest.

effect

The picture antics sold very badly. For their publisher Heinrich Schmitz, they meant a significant financial loss. Perhaps this is partly due to the story of Eispeter, which is a source of alienation to this day. Wolfgang Teichmann , the editor of the complete edition published in the GDR in 1960/1961, found it so shocking that he was the only picture story not to include it in his edition.
