Der Islam : Journal of the History and Culture of the Middle East is an interdisciplinary scientific journal dealing with research on the history and culture of the Middle East . Are published in articles latest research results from the historical sciences , the history of art , cultural studies , Papyrology , numismatics or linguistics present. Thematically, the magazine focuses on the term “ Islam ” not only on religion itself, but also looks at the historical, civilizational or cultural aspects of earlier and present Islamic societies.

The magazine is published by the Walter de Gruyter publishing house, based in Berlin. The magazine was founded in 1910 by the German orientalist Carl Heinrich Becker . His work was continued by Hellmut Ritter and Bertold Spuler, among others . The current editor-in-chief has been the orientalist Stefan Heidemann ( University of Hamburg ) since 2012 .

The journal is peer-reviewed every six months and publishes articles in English, German and French.
