The boat with the two hanged men (original title La Péniche aux deux pendus ) is a story by Georges Simenon in which Commissioner Maigret investigates a death at a lock. The work belonging to the series of Maigret novels and stories was one of Simenon's first Maigret stories. It was created in October 1936 in Neuilly-sur-Seine and appeared in 1944 in the anthology Les nouvelles enquêtes de Maigret by Gallimard . It was published in a German translation by Hansjürgen Wille and Barbara Klau in 1976 by Kiepenheuer and Witsch , and in a new translation by Elfriede Riegler in 1987 by Diogenes in the anthology Six New Cases for Maigret .

Maigret is called to the lock at Le Coudray, where the barge Astrolabe floats on the river and hinders shipping. Claessens, the wagoner sleeping in his intoxication, a dog and two corpses are found on board; they are Captain Arthur Aerts, hanging on a dog chain, and his wife Emma Aerts, hanging on a sheet. Everyone suspects Émile Gradut, stoker on the Aiglon VII , who was Emma's childhood friend and who had disappeared for a long time. He is arrested in the forest of Rougeau, but claims his innocence. Meanwhile, Maigret turns up at the bistro upstream of the crime scene, La Citanguette , and then spends the night on the Astrolabe . The next morning Maigret can solve the crime: Emma had married Aerts because of his money; when she found him drunk, she strangled him with the dog chain. She then called Gradut, together they looked for the money, but could not find it. Gradut fled after knocking Emma down and let the boat off the lines. When Emma woke up to find the boat drifting, she lost heart and hanged herself. Finally Maigret found the money in a secret hiding place, 100,000 francs in gold coins.

The story was preprinted in Paris-Soir- Dimanche (supplément, n ° 45) in the October 30 and November 7, 1936 editions. It was published in book form in Les nouvelles enquêtes de Maigret (Paris, Gallimard, NRF, 1944). An English-French edition in the volume Maigret enquête was published in London by George G. Harrap in 1959. The narrative that u. a. also appeared in Ellery Queens Mystery Magazine in 1961 , was also included in the work editions Œuvres complètes (Lausanne, Editions Rencontre, 1967–1973) in volume IX, in Tout Simenon (Paris, Presses de la Cité, 1988–1993) in volume 24 and in Tout Simenon (Paris, Omnibus, 2002–2004) included in volume 24. The story was first published in German in the anthology Neues von Maigret. 16 cases by the famous Parisian commissioner . (Tr .: Klau-Wille) published. It is now available in a new translation in Diogenes' anthology, The Complete Maigret Stories ( ISBN 978-3-257-06682-1 ).

The story was published as an audio book together with the man on the street , read by Edgar M. Böhlke , by Steinbach Verlag.
