History and Development

Since the late 1950s there have been efforts to introduce a prison newspaper in Berlin prison. However, this has been done only on 25 October 1968, when the instigation of the then senior government director Wilhelm Glaubrecht launched bright spot first appeared. At that time there were two other prisoner newspapers in Germany, but only Der Lichtblick was edited by prisoners according to press law rules. The guiding principle from the beginning was to create a newspaper by prisoners for prisoners and to keep out any content-related influence by the prison management. A loosening of the relationship between civil servants and prisoners through independent but objective reporting was also intended. The first statute that was drawn up represents a novelty that is valid to this day in terms of cooperation and trust between the prison management and the inmates.

Since it was founded in 1968, hundreds of people inside and outside of prison walls have written texts for Lichtblick. The composition of the editorial team is constantly changing due to the release of editors from prison and the subsequent replacement. The traditional format, the topic and the appearance of the magazine itself remain the same. The design and scope of the magazine as well as the size and frequency of the circulation have been updated and adjusted over the years. The newspaper has been published without gaps since it was founded, which has been traceable since 2014 using a digitally created archive.

The prison newspaper is supported by the Lichtblick e. V.

editorial staff

Responsible editor-in-chief 2012/2013 was the well-known former squatter and bank robber Dieter Wurm .

In March 2018, the four-person editorial team worked in the former three-man cell number 117 with modern office and computer technology. However, since she is not allowed to have an internet connection, she has to rely on friends and acquaintances outside of the prison for research .

In November 2018, five prisoners make up the editorial team. You can communicate with the outside world without restriction via an editorial telephone and internet connection. With the help of so-called runner ID cards , the editorial staff can move freely in the prison and thus has access to almost all inmates. A censorship does not take place. The administration also receives the newspaper after it has been printed.
