Papa will fix it

The song Der Papa will fix it (text and music by Gerhard Bronner , best known vocal version by Helmut Qualtinger ) is a critical cabaret number from 1958, the title of which has become proverbial in Austria as a synonym for protectionist and nepotism .

The song was presented on October 22, 1958 in one of the eight episodes of the 1958-1959 running, live TV cabaret show Spiegel vorm Gsicht . It targets the cynical attitude of a bored and arrogant Jeunesse dorée who meets in the “hip” Viennese Eden Bar in the 1950s and lets wealthy and prominent fathers put aside any difficulties. A job at the Atomic Energy Commission with (at that time horrendous) "thirteen thousand Schlei ( Schilling ) monthly wages" does not appear to be a problem here, despite a lack of training, as does "applanating" the " faux pas " of a fatal traffic accident. "Nothing happened", the Porsche has already been repaired, the narrator says cynically ("Unfortunately, I am a passerby before it is struck, blown up"). When a friend asked what happened to the Porsche driver's license, the Porsche driver boasted that a phone call from the powerful father “in the right place” would suffice and the “files could not be found” immediately. The father knows so many stories that bother other people ...

The song captivates with its satirical sharpness and the successful imitation of the nasal, " Schönbrunnerln " linguistic style of its three protagonists ("der Gießhübl, the Puntigam and i").

The passages of the song referring to the traffic accident were generally interpreted as an allusion to the relevant affair of the son of the then Austrian National Council President Felix Hurdes . Shortly after the TV program was broadcast, Hurdes had to resign.
