The Eden Bar in Vienna

The Eden Bar in Liliengasse 2 near St. Stephen's Cathedral is a traditional Viennese inner city pub with a history dating back around a hundred years.

The bar's first owner was Emmy Stein, real name Emma Steininger. The operetta singer at the Theater an der Wien and Bürgertheater acquired the bar in 1919 and renamed it from City Bar to Eden Bar. During the Nazi regime , she was deprived of her property and was imprisoned for about two months for bugging enemy radio stations . In 1948 the establishment was returned. The owner sold it to Gabor Kenezy, Liane Augustin's husband, as early as 1953 . From 1974 until his death in 2005, the Viennese "night club king" Heinz Werner Schimanko was the owner of the Eden Bar. He undertook to preserve the "upscale" character of the restaurant (tie obligation), but introduced the custom of taking photos of prominent bar visitors from politics, Exhibit economy and social life in the display. The current owner is Michaela Schimanko-Stiedl, the oldest daughter of Heinz Werner Schimanko.

In 2004 they celebrated 100 years of Eden. However, the house at Liliengasse 2 was only built in 1911 by the architect Rudolf Erdös . In 2011, the 100th anniversary was celebrated again.

In 1958, Gerhard Bronner immortalized the bar as a meeting place for a bored and cynical Jeunesse dorée with his song Der Papa will straighten it out for Helmut Qualtinger . A few years earlier, Bronner said he could have taken over the bar from the owner in return for an annuity, an opportunity that he did not take.

Artists who have performed in the Eden Bar include Fausto Mola, Franco Andolfo and Peter Galsai .

The film Lex Minister by Peter Patzak with Hans Peter Heinzl in the leading role is set in the Eden Bar.

In October 2017, “the Eden” had to file for bankruptcy, but operations should continue.
