The Republican

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Republican was a Swiss daily newspaper that appeared several times a week. The Republican was the most important and most reliable source of information in the Helvetic era , especially because of the conscientious reporting on political events.

The newspaper was founded in 1798 by Paul Usteri and Hans Conrad Escher von der Linth and was first published on February 20, 1798 under the title Der Schweizerische Republikaner . Although the editors took a positive view of the new unitary state of the Helvetic Republic, they also criticized the government, which led to the newspaper being suppressed and having to change its name several times. The publishers also changed frequently, including Orell, Füssli & Co. in Zurich. Around 1800 the newspaper had a circulation of around 200. The first newspaper appeared weekly, then several times a week.

Escher left the Republican at the beginning of 1801. After the end of the Helvetic Republic, the Republican ceased its publication in August 1803.
