Giovanni Antonio Matera
Giovanni Antonio Matera (born September 2, 1653 in Trapani , † 1718 in Palermo ) was a Baroque sculptor in Sicily .
Life
The carver Giovanni Matera mainly created nativity scenes. He followed the art form that was particularly widespread in Trapani, of which Alberto Tipa was the most famous representative . Little is known about his artistic life. He was charged with a crime as a result of a family feud. Before being charged, he fled to Monreale and later found refuge in the monastery of Sant 'Antonio in Palermo. His sculptures, mostly executed on a small scale, show references to the Baroque style of Gian Lorenzo Bernini .
