action

A young countess resides in a castle with her aging husband. One day the two get a visit from the violin virtuoso Pellini. While the old count is playing cards with the local pastor, who is also present, the artist and the lady of the house go for a short, moonlit night walk on the palace terrace. Still completely enchanted by his violin playing, she doesn't flinch when Pellini takes the boldness of wanting to kiss the noblewoman. At this very moment, however, the castle valet Thomas intervenes with a cup of mocha and prevents the worst from happening. He also grins unashamedly, as if he has no respect for his young boss. In truth, however, the lackey himself kept an eye on the beautiful woman.

Since Madame decides that she has almost been unfaithful to her husband, she rushes from the terrace back into the interior of the castle and immediately goes to her room. She quickly falls into a deep sleep, but it is anything but restful. In a terrible dream she sees herself and Pellini being pursued by the demonic servant who stubbornly demands love from her. Otherwise he would tell his master, the count, about the looming liaison with the violinist. In the dream the lackey forces the countess to go hunting with him. She uses the opportunity to shoot the blackmailing servant with the hunting rifle, but at that moment he bends down to deal the fatal blow to the deer she had just killed with a hunter . The shot is fired ... and the countess wakes up. The next morning she confesses everything to her husband and also tells him about her (night) dream. The servant is dismissed and Pellini is told to leave immediately.

criticism

"A fine moral picture that has a special effect due to its peculiarity is ..." The shot in a dream ". (...) The dream is presented so grippingly that one forgets that a terrible dream image with all its improbabilities passes by here. Leopoldine Konstantin as the countess, Fritz Feher as the virtuoso and Mr. Ulach as the servant Thomas perform perfectly coordinated. "The shot in a dream" must be considered a very fine film ... "
