The bad luck charm: The life and death of Robert Durst (Original title: The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst ) is an American six-part documentary series about the businessman Robert Durst by Andrew Jarecki , published in 2015 by Home Box Office (HBO) was broadcast.

Durst killed his neighbor Morris Black in 2001. In the subsequent criminal proceedings, Durst was acquitted of the charge of intentional homicide, as a self-defense situation could not be ruled out, but was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, among other things for manipulating evidence.

Thirst has also been linked to two unresolved cases: his wife Kathleen has been missing since January 31, 1982, and on Christmas Eve 2000, Susan Berman, a friend of Thirst, was found murdered.

The documentary deals with Robert Durst's life and his possible involvement in the unresolved cases.

The series was written by Andrew Jarecki , Marc Smerling, and Zachary Stuart-Pontier. The director was Andrew Jarecki, who had already made All Good Things about the same topic in 2010. Jarecki was the first to tell his story after seeing his film. Since Durst revealed one piquant detail after another, the format originally planned as a documentary was expanded into a six-part television series and bought by HBO. HBO aired the series on the more prestigious Sunday night, rather than the Monday night, which is traditionally documentary films and series.

In the series finale, Durst is confronted with a letter linking him to the murder of Berman. He denies this and goes to the bathroom where he talks to himself . This ends with the words: “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course. "

In Germany, Sky showed the series from March 20, 2015 via its online service Sky Go and Sky Online in the original language with German subtitles. The German dubbed version is to be broadcast for the first time on May 14, 2015 on Sky Atlantic HD .

reception

Axel Schmitt from Serienjunkies.de describes the first episode as a “masterful, exciting structure” for telling the life story of Robert Durst. The best thing that could happen to director Jarecki is “not the story of the protagonist, but the protagonist himself”. Schmitt concludes, in agreement with Andy Greenwald from Grantland, that one still has to keep in mind that the corpses here are not points of action, but memories of the cruel, real world that one so often wants to escape on television.

John Hendrickson from Esquire called the finale "one of the most jaw-dropping moments in television history". The confession shocked millions.

arrest

The day before the last episode of the TV show was broadcast, March 14, 2015, Robert Durst was arrested for murder by the FBI after the LAPD obtained an arrest warrant. Due to new knowledge there is an urgent suspicion against thirst in the case of Susan Berman. He is being held without the option of being released on bail.
