The last heir to Lassa is an Austro-Hungarian silent film drama from 1918 by Conrad Wiene .

action

The dying Countess von Lassa asks her household friend, Count Gorky, to keep an eye on her child who has just been born, as she believes that her husband will not take the necessary care in raising it. This is because he always wanted a male ancestral owner and is disappointed with the female offspring and shows little interest in his little daughter. In order to give her at least something robustly masculine, Count Lassa from then on made sure to raise the child like a boy and not too soft. After 17 years, Count Lassa's upbringing turned the young countess into a real tomboy. Count Gorky also discovered this when he visited the young countess after a long absence. Now he remembers the promise made on his deathbed and wants to transform her boyish nature into that of a young woman that resembles that of her deceased mother. Gorky already has a person in mind who could transform the countess into a well-bred young lady: his friend, the handsome, young Baron Castellamare.

Gorky orders Castellamare, a brisk bon vivant, at Lassa Castle, where the two young people get to know each other and, as Gorky planned, fall in love. But one night the young baron goes a step too far. Drunk with love, he penetrates the countess' room and is almost caught by old Lassa. The countess is now out of a sense of honor and a sense of class that Castellamare's behavior should not go unpunished and demands of her lover to shoot herself. The next morning he is actually found dead. There is a trial against Countess von Lassa because the dead man shot herself with her revolver. The young countess swears heart-softening that she never wanted his death because she loved the baron. But then Count Gorky appears and clarifies the matter. The baron was not dead at all, he had merely pretended to be dead. In this way, Castellamare only wanted to test the feelings of his loved ones and to convince the Count of his honest intentions. Both lovers fall into each other's arms and finally become engaged.

criticism

“Due to the excellent photography, the skillful direction, which, like the subject, is thanks to Conrad Wiene, this picture is characterized by splendid furnishings and excellent portrayals of Viennese actors by name. Tilly Kutschera from the kk Burgtheater plays the female lead with a delightful naturalness. Her famous father, Mr. Viktor Kutschera from the Deutsches Volkstheater and Mr. Muck de Jary play the male roles. This film preaches psychological questions in wonderful scenes. (...) The excellent game increases the interest, which is already high due to the plot. "
