Derby Krakowa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Derby Krakowa ( Polish for Krakow Derby ) is the match between the Krakow football clubs Wisla and Cracovia . The derby is also known as “Święta Wojna” (Holy War). It goes back to the defender Ludwik Gintel , who played for Cracovia between 1916 and 1930 and who is said to have said sometime around 1920 before a derby against Wisla: "Gentlemen, we are now going to the holy war".

Derby balance sheet

Including the match played on October 7, 2018, which Cracovia lost 2-2 to Wisla in the home stadium, the Krakowa Derby has been played 198 times so far. Wisla emerged victorious 92 times, Cracovia won 60 matches and 46 games ended in a draw.

Sociological characteristics

The fans of Wisla like to see themselves as the only true Polish club in town, while they perceive Cracovia as the club of the then occupying Austria-Hungary . In fact, Cracovia was founded (like Wisla founded in 1906, but at an earlier date) on an initiative of the Jewish doctor Dr. Lustgarten back. His Jewish flair as well as his aristocratic and bourgeois currents were in any case a thorn in the side of the communist rulers , which is why Wisla, which was converted into a “uniformed sports club” - from 1948 to 1955 under the name “Gwardia” (Eng. Guard ) - during the communist period Epoch played first-class over long stretches, Cracovia, however, was rarely found in the House of Lords. According to the club's history, the supporters of Wisla are more pro-state and politically right-wing , which is noticeable, among other things, through the "off the gas" calls against Cracovia, whereas Cracovia, which emerged from a student environment, likes to refer to its intellectual image .

Geographical features

The two stadiums are only about 1 km apart. Wisla's Stadium is located immediately northwest of Henryk Jordan Park, and Cracovia Stadium is adjacent to the same park in the southeast. Accordingly, the geographical distribution of the respective fan base should also roughly result: accordingly, the strongholds of Wisla are to be located in the north and west of the city, while Cracovia mainly recruits its followers from the south and east.

In fact, the "Sharks", as the dreaded Wisla hooligans call themselves, and their counterpart, the "Jude Gang" of their city rival Cracovia, are said to have brought entire neighborhoods under their control, so that they are considered their territory or their opponents as Enemy territory. Because it occasionally happens that a combat force invades a neighborhood controlled by the enemy, completely uninvolved people have been injured several times. These arguments are less about "sport" and "honor" than about organized crime , in which many hooligans on both sides are entangled. So both sides should u. a. control the Cracow drug trade almost completely. At least at Wisla, the dreaded hooligan group the "Sharks" is said to have already taken control of the club.
