Derby Records was an American jazz and rhythm & blues label that existed from 1949 to 1954.

History of the label

The independent record label Derby Records was founded in 1949 by Larry Newton and his business partner Eddie Heller in New York City. In the first two years of its existence, it was aimed at the booming R&B market in the United States. The label's studio band was led by tenor saxophonist Freddie Mitchell . The label was successfully represented in the US charts with the song "Wheel of Fortune" by Sunny Gale , arranged and accompanied by Eddie Wilcox . At the end of 1953 Newton founded another label, Central Records, with Lee Magid, which soon led to the financial end of Derby Records . The master tapes were acquired by RCA Records in 1954 and the recordings were sold on the budget sub-label Allegro , which was geared towards the booming rock'n'roll market. Recordings by Joe Black, Eunice Davis , Frank Humphries , Bette McLaurin , Bobby Mitchell , Jaye P. Morgan , Doc Pomus , Jimmy Preston , Tommy Reynolds , Trudy Richards , Valaida Snow , Cedric Wallace , Eddie Wilcox and Cootie Williams have appeared on the label .
