The Bommecketal is a 51.20 ha large, since 1985 instructed out conservation area (NSG) in the field of city Plettenberg in Märkischer Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located south of the Lenne along the Lenne tributary Bommecke and northwest of the city center between the mountain peaks Lechtenhardt (488 m), Dörnberg, Schellhagen and Strickhagen. The NSG was designated in 1985 by the district council of the Märkisches Kreis with the landscape plan No. 1 (Plettenberg-Herscheid-Neuenrade) . The name was the nature reserve Bommecketal southwest of the district Böddinghausen, town of Plettenberg . With the 2nd amendment to the landscape plan no. 1 (Plettenberg-Herscheid-Neuenrade), the NSG was designated again in 2012 and renamed the Bommecketal nature reserve .

The nature reserve is part of the 39 hectare FFH area "Schluchtwälder im Lennetal" (DE-4712-301).

Area description

The NSG is the valley of the Bommecke with its source streams. From an altitude of 420  m above sea level. NHN up to about 250  m above sea level. NHN , the stream extends to the outskirts of the Plettenberg district Papenkuhle in the Lennetal. Of the total length of the creek of around 3 km from the source to the confluence with the Lenne, 1.9 km are in the NSG. The watercourse with a lot of water flows to the north in a rapidly descending gorge valley with a partly gorge-like character. The following description can be found in the specialist information system of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection North Rhine-Westphalia under Biotopes Worthy of Protection (BK): Cut into the blue schist, cliffs form at all altitudes and on all slopes. The protruding rocks consist locally of an alternating layer of clay schist, siltstone and sandstone. Where sandstones predominate, powerful block exudations occur. The Bommecke receives water from several inlets from the slopes of the Leuchtenhardt and the Dörnberg. In the spring gorges facing east and north, spring corridors with Chrysosplenium oppositifolium and numerous moisture- and cool-loving mosses are represented. There are numerous rapids and waterfalls in the notched valleys of the various source streams. The cliffs are partly piled up from large blocks. The individual blocks are interspersed with crevices and fracture joints. Together with the jagged points of the splintery squeezed out slate, they determine the appearance of the rock formations. The valley has in parts a gorge-like character (gradient 12: 1). In places it runs at right angles to the surface of the Hobräcker layers, which is why there are smaller rock barriers in the stream bed and small waterfalls up to 1.5 m in height, pools, but also shallow water areas form as terrace steps. The stones are often covered with moss. The up to 3 m wide streambed of the lower Bommecke is only partially lined by a layer of herbs accompanying the stream. The vegetation on the steep slopes facing north corresponds to the potential natural vegetation with its small-scale beech forest parcels. Their expression is rather poor in species. Sessile oak stands of medium-sized tree wood are more common. The stands on the middle and upper slopes are interspersed with beech and birch. Their growth character suggests a former coppice forest management in some areas. In the herbaceous layer, the wire schmiele is widespread, the oak fern occurs locally. The skeletal shady slopes of the lower slopes are occupied by beech, sycamore, oak and hornbeam. Mountain elms are only very few and scattered as older specimens. A layer of herbs is present in places, but relatively few species. Ferns are more common in the lower layers. Most stunted sessile oaks, beeches and birches grow on the dry raw soil of the rocky sites. In the upper sections of the stream, the Bommecke is accompanied in parts by a narrow alder border. Adjacent spruce stands strongly shade the upper sections of the stream. The area is due to its equipment with natural, z. Sometimes undisturbed and closely interlinked biotopes, consisting of acidic beech forests, damp and cool ravine and mixed hillside forests, natural spring streams and steep rocky areas as well as a habitat for many endangered animal and plant species of supraregional importance. The majority of the area is part of the Lütttgen Bommerke wilderness area.

Protection purpose

The nature reserve was designed to preserve and develop a forest area with mixed ravine and hillside forests, alder, ash and softwood alluvial forests, grove and beech forests, the Bommecke valley system and its steep slopes, silicate cliffs , a stream gorge with rapids and richly structured that is unique for the Märkisches Kreis Stream beds including their source areas and designated as a habitat for the protection of rare and endangered animal and plant species. As with other nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area became a nature reserve “because of its scenic beauty and uniqueness”.

Under special prohibitions , the landscape plan stated “to use the indigenous forest areas (oak-hornbeam forest) for forestry purposes; the exception is the use of individual logs according to the provisions of the Lower Landscape Authority ”.
