As a member of the Forza Italia party , he was a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2015 . He has been President of the Liguria Region since 2015 . Toti founded the party Cambiamo! In August 2019 which he has headed ever since.

life and career

Toti grew up in Marina di Massa on the coast of Tuscany, where his family ran a hotel. As a schoolboy he was a member of the youth organization Partito Socialista Italiano . He studied political science at the University of Milan. From 1997 he worked as a journalist for Studio Aperto , the news program of the TV channel Italia 1 , which belongs to Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset group. In 2010 he became editor-in-chief of Studio Aperto . In 2012, as Emilio Fede's successor , he also took over the management of TG4 , the Rete 4 news format that belongs to the same group. Under his leadership, the meteorine - scantily clad young women who presented the weather report - were replaced by professional meteorologists.

At the beginning of 2014, Toti switched to politics and ran for Berlusconi's Forza Italia party in the European elections . He was elected to the European Parliament as a representative of the constituency of Northwest Italy. There he belonged to the EPP Group , was a member of the Committee on Culture and Education and a delegate in the Committee on Parliamentary Cooperation between the EU and Russia. For the regional elections in Liguria in May 2015, he ran as the top candidate of the center-right alliance (Forza Italia, Lega Nord , Fratelli d'Italia ). He was elected president of the region with 34.4% of the vote. In July 2015 he resigned from his EU mandate. Since then he has also been Vice President of the Conference of Italian Regions and Autonomous Provinces.

After Forza Italia's poor performance in the 2019 European elections , Berlusconi appointed Toti and Mara Carfagna as national coordinators with a mandate to reform the party. Toti's proposal to determine top positions in primary elections that should be open not only to party members but to all interested citizens, however, did not meet with Berlusconi's support. Toti then complained about a lack of intra-party democracy and an unclear orientation of Forza Italia. In August 2019, he left Forza Italia and started a new center-right party called Cambiamo! ("Let's change!"). This wants to continue the alliance with the right-wing parties Lega Nord and Fratelli d'Italia.
