Derek is a documentary film by Isaac Julien on the life and work of British artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman from the year 2008 . The film combines three central components: it begins with the letter “Letter to an Angel” that the actress Tilda Swinton wrote to the director friend eight years after Jarman's death. The focus is on a previously unpublished interview by Colin McCabe with Jarman. The entire film is accompanied by excerpts from Jarman's films and the rest of his work.

Reviews

  • Derek is like a flash of lightning that once again illuminates the inspiring power of Derek Jarman's person and his work in rough brushstrokes. The film is not a biographical obituary for a deceased artist. On the contrary: with a lot of love, heart and determination, Jarman's ideas and his community-building way of making films are brought back to the present. "(Festival blog)
