Michael Sean Coulthard (born December 8, 1968 in Syracuse , New York ), better known under the name Michael Cole , is an American journalist and ring commentator for the WWE- produced wrestling programs RAW and SmackDown .

Career

Coulthard went to the then World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) in 1997 and began using the name "Michael Cole" as a pseudonym. Together with Jim Cornette , he became the host of the "LiveWire" show and worked as a backstage interviewer. From the end of 1997 he was one of the three commentators for the first hour of RAW alongside Jim Ross and Kevin Kelly. After being temporarily replaced by Jerry Lawler , he was appointed regular commentator on RAW issues in 1999.

When WWE launched their new show SmackDown! started, Coulthard was sent there to take over the commentary on the matches on the side of Tazz . For a short time he also commented on the B show Velocity . After his partner Tazz became a commentator on the newly created ECW brand, Coulthard got John Layfield as a co-commentator. This in turn gave his return as an active wrestler at the end of 2007, so that his post was taken over by Jonathan Coachman in January 2008 . There was already another change in April, Coachman was replaced by Mick Foley . At the WWE Draft in June 2008, Coulthard was transferred to RAW and got the post from Jim Ross, who from then on commented on SmackDown.

Since 2010 he has expanded his role as a commentator by becoming more actively involved in the ringing scene through extreme devotion to wrestlers who appear as "heels" ("bad" ring characters) such as The Miz or Alberto Del Rio . He also criticizes matches of the "Divas" (female wrestlers) from Eve Torres and Kelly Kelly, among others . His controversial appearance as a "Heel" commentator was approved by WWE Boss Vince McMahon , so that Coulthard also competed as an active wrestler in a match against wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer Jerry "The King" Lawler at WrestleMania 27 in April 2011. At Extreme Rules 2011 , he also played a victorious tag team match alongside Jack Swagger against Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross and at Over the Limit again a single match with Lawler, which he lost.

He unsuccessfully participated in the 2012 Royal Rumble after fellow commentators Jerry Lawler and Booker T attended.

Since the end of the feud, he has returned to RAW as a commentator alongside Lawler. In addition, Coulthard commented on SmackDown again from October 2010 to October 2012, this time with Josh Matthews, with whom he could be heard in the first three seasons of WWE NXT .

Coulthard received special attention during the September 10, 2012 RAW episode in which fellow commentator Jerry Lawler suffered a heart attack. After Lawler was brought out of the hall and resuscitated, Coulthard kept the audience informed about Lawler's health for the rest of the show, but did not comment on any matches. He has received much praise from officials, other Superstars and fans of the WWE for this professional behavior.
