Derek Beales

Derek Edward Dawson Beales (born June 12, 1931 in Felixstowe ) is a British historian . He wrote a comprehensive work on Emperor Joseph II.

Life

Beales was educated at Cambridge University, where he received a BA, an MA and a PhD in 1953 . He was made a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in 1955 and a professor of history at the university in 1965, where he served until 1980. Until 1997 he was Professor of Modern History at Cambridge.

He was editor of The Historical Journal from 1971 to 1975. From 1984 to 1987 he was a member of the council of the Royal Historical Society . In 1989 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy .
