Tim Blanning

Timothy Charles William Blanning , FBA , (born April 21, 1942 ) is a British historian.

Life

Tim Blanning attended King's School in Bruton and then studied at Sidney Sussex College , Cambridge, where he received his doctorate in 1967. In 1972 he was hired as an assistant lecturer at the University of Cambridge . He was appointed lecturer in 1976 and reader in 1987, and finally professor in 1992. Until his retirement in 2009 he taught modern European history.

In 1974 Blanning published a study on the history of the city of Mainz in the 18th century up to the Mainz republic . His second book, The French Revolution in Germany: Occupation and Resistance in the Rhineland, 1792-1802 , published in 1983, also dealt with this period. About the French Revolution and his third book was The Origins of the French Revolutionary Wars (1986). In 1994 he published a biography of Emperor Joseph II. Several cultural and historical works followed. Further biographies dealt with Frederick the Great in 2015 and George I.

Blanning was elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 1990. Blanning received a Doctor of Letters from the University of Cambridge in 1998 . In 2016 he was awarded the British Academy Medal for his book about Frederick the Great .
