Derek William Robinson (* 1935 ) is a British theoretical and mathematical physicist and mathematician. He was a professor at the Australian National University .

Robinson is of Irish roots and grew up in southern England. He studied mathematics at Oxford University with a bachelor's degree in 1957 and received his doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics at Oxford in 1960 with David Brink (Multiple Coulomb Excitations in deformed nuclei). He then did research in Switzerland, Germany, France (where he was at IHES in the 1960s ) and the USA and was a professor in Marseille for ten years . In 1978 he went to the University of New South Wales in Australia as a professor of mathematics and since 1982 he was a professor at the Australian National University.

He dealt mathematically with quantum field theory and statistical mechanics.

With Jorge A. Swieca and Daniel Kastler , he gave a mathematical justification of the Goldstone theorem in 1966 . With Ola Bratteli he wrote a monograph on operator algebras and statistical mechanics.

In 1996 he was President of the Australian Mathematical Society .
