Ola Bratteli (born October 24, 1946 in Oslo ; † February 8, 2015 there ) was a Norwegian mathematician.

Bratelli's father was the temporary (from 1971) Norwegian Prime Minister Trygve Bratteli , his mother Randi Bratteli is an author and journalist. He attended the cathedral school in Oslo and from 1967 studied mathematics at the University of Oslo , where he received his candidate degree from Erling Størmer in 1963 ( Point Measures in the Two-Sided Non-Commutative Integration Theory ). From 1971 to 1973 he was a research fellow at New York University with James Glimm , where he studied operator algebras in quantum field theory , but did not complete his Ph.D. as intended. bei Glimm, but returned to Norway and received his doctorate in 1974 with the dissertation " Inductive limits of finite dimensional C * -algebras " with Erling Størmer at the University of Oslo. He then went to the Center for Theoretical Physics at the University of Marseille, where his collaboration with Derek W. Robinson began on mathematical quantum field theory, which continued when Robinson became a professor in Australia. He was also at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Bielefeld. In 1980 he became a professor at the Norwegian Technical University and has taught at the University of Oslo since 1991.

Bratelli dealt with operator algebras with applications in quantum field theory and quantum statistics and most recently with wavelets . The Bratteli diagrams for the study of AF-C * algebras are associated with his name.

In 2004 he received the Nansen Foundation Prize from the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and in 2004 the Möbius Prize from the Norwegian Research Council.
