Erling Størmer

Erling Størmer (born November 2, 1937 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian mathematician who deals with operator algebras and especially C * algebras.

He is the son of geologist and paleontologist Leif Størmer and grandson of Carl Størmer . Størmer received his doctorate from Columbia University in 1963 with Richard Kadison (Point Measures in the Two-Sided Non-Commutative Integration Theory) and was professor in Oslo from 1974 until his retirement in 2007.

He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

From 2002 to 2006 he headed the Abel Committee (which awards the Abel Prize ). In 1974 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver (Some aspects of ergodic theory in operator algebras).

Ola Bratteli (Oslo 1974) is one of his doctoral students .
