Leif Størmer (born July 1, 1905 in Kristiania , † May 15, 1979 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian geologist and paleontologist .

Leif Størmer, son of the mathematician Frederik Carl Mülertz Størmer , grew up in an academic environment and showed a great interest in geology and palaeontology during his school days . Even before his graduation in 1923, he published his first scientific papers. He then studied at the University of Oslo , where he received his doctorate in 1931 ( Scandinavian trinucleidae with special references to Norwegian species and varieties ). He was Professor of Historical Geology at the University of Oslo from 1946 to 1975 and was Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1957 to 1959.

During his academic career he published about 70 large and small scripts. His research area included the description, systematics and development of the trilobites and other fossil arthropods (Arthropoda), such as the sea ​​scorpions (Eurypterida) and the swordtails (Xiphosura).

Størmer was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences (appointed in 1940).

His son Erling Størmer is a mathematician.
