The ruins of Derrynane Abbey (also Ahamore Abbey called Irish Tigh Mor Dhoire Fhíonáin ) in the Irish county of Kerry is located on the small island named Abbey Iceland , on the southwestern coast of the Iveragh Peninsula , which for Derrynane National Historic Park belongs. The closest place is Caherdaniel .

history

According to legend, the monastery of the Iroschottische Church was founded by St. Fionan in the 6th century. The name Derrynanes is derived from the name of this important Irish island saint, Doire Fhionain ("Fionan's Wood / Fionan's Forest"). St. Fionan, better known as St. Finnian of Clonard , lived from AD 470 to AD 549 and is considered the "teacher of the Irish saints". The monastery later became an Augustinian settlement when it adopted the Rule of Augustine in the 12th century .

Derrynane was probably a cell of the St. Michael Ballinskellig priory , which is important in this region of Ireland , whose convent had moved from the monastery island of Skellig Michael to the mainland. The literature also discussed whether Derrynane was a cell of the Molana monastery . “Derrynane Abbey” has never been an abbey in its history. The name only comes from the local vernacular.

Only three parts of the monastery complex have survived, including the monastery church with the three east windows typical of Irish sacred buildings. The Chapel of lying on the opposite coast side mansion Derrynane House is modeled after the medieval architecture of the monastery church.
