Coordinates: 42 ° 47 ′ S , 147 ° 4 ′ E The Derwent Valley Municipality is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Tasmania . The area is 4111 km² and has about 10,000 inhabitants (2016).
Derwent Valley is located in the south of the island about 16 miles northwest of Hobart city center . The area comprises 27 hamlets and villages: Black Hills, Boyer, Bushy Park, Fitzgerald, Glen Fern, Glenfern, Glenora, Hayes, Karania, Lachlan, Lawitta, Macquarie Plains, Magra, Malbina, Maydena, Molesworth, Moogara, Mount Lloyd, National Park, New Norfolk, Plenty, Rosegarland, Sorell Creek, Strathgordon , Tyenna, Uxbridge and Westerway. The seat of the council is in New Norfolk at the east end of the LGA, where about 5800 inhabitants live (2016).

The Derwent Valley Council has nine members. The mayor (mayor), his deputy (deputy) and seven councilors are directly elected by the residents of the LGA. Derwent Valley is not divided into districts.
