Despotović (family name)

Despotović is a family name of Serbian origin that originated in the 14th century and is now widely used by Serbian and Croatian emigrants in Europe and overseas. The family name is derived from the Greek word despotes, in Yugoslavian despot is also a court title.

Significance and origin

The surname Despotović appears in written sources since the 13th century in the Vasojević - Pastrović area . It is also noted in the parish registers of Svete Trojice in Belgrade (Pljevlja). Despot was a family of Orthodox faith who were later registered as Despot-Despotović with two names. After 1497, the proportion of namesake in western Herzegovina and Mučko in the Croatian part of Dalmatia increased . In land registers and local church registers from the 16th century in Zaostrog 6 new families were recorded in the list of residents. These were Despot-Despotović (1607), Sladojević (1611-1612), Jugović (1613), Stipanović, Andrijašević, Pavlić (1624) and Klarić (1644).

An ecclesiastical document shows that the family of Luka Despot-Despotović, who served the Croatian Franciscan monastery of Zaostrog and the church, was acquitted of all Turkish taxes.

In 1679 further entries in church registers followed:

  1. 1679: Luka Despot-Despotović, the son of Mark and Ana, was baptized, Lukas Vlastelica was baptized
  2. 1680: Jura Despotović, son of Simon and Margarita
  3. In the same year Nikola Despotović was at the baptism of Andrija, the son of Luka and Margarita
  4. 1683: Petrić Despotović, daughter of Jurina and Margarita, was baptized
  5. 1684: Šime Despotović, son of Jurin and Margarita, was baptized, and Andrija Rozgić was godfather
  6. 1684: Stanislav Despotović sponsor of the baptism of Stanislav Gospić, daughter Franine and Katina.

Despotović is one of the most common surnames in Ogorje's 1711 Venetian land register.

distribution

The name Despotović is mainly borne by Croats from the area around Sinj , Split and Zastrog and Serbs from the area around Slavonski Brod . The family name is most common in Krusvar near Sinj, where every 30th inhabitant is called Despotović. In Croatia today there are about 400 people named Despotović in more than 130 households and over 900 in Serbia and Montenegro .
