Det frie Gymnasium is a private high school in Copenhagen .
The school was originally founded in 1970 as an experimental and alternative form of teaching. In addition to aesthetic education, which is expressed in various theater and music activities, emphasis is placed on democratic education . According to its own account, the school's highest authority is the weekly school meeting , which all employees and students must attend in order to stand up for their concerns. The school is a democratic school and a member of the European Democratic Education Community (EUDEC).
The grammar school was originally founded in the Krogshøjvej villa in Bagsværd and eventually moved to Birkerød . At the end of the 1980s the school moved to the Copenhagen district of Vesterbrogade and since 1992 it has had its actual address in the district of Nørrebro at Møllegade 26.
Although the school is private and independent, the funding is covered by 85% state funds and 15% private income.
