Detalmo Pirzio-Biroli (* 1915 in Friuli , † the thirtieth March 2006 in Castello di Brazzà , Italy ) was an Italian nobleman , officer , resistance fighters , author and EU - diplomat . He was married to the German noblewoman Fey von Hassell , the daughter of the German local politician and resistance fighter Ulrich von Hassell .

Life

Detalmo Pirzio-Biroli came from an old Italian noble family . He was born the son of Idanna Di Brazza and her husband Giuseppe Pirzio-Biroli , brother of the Italian general Alessandro Pirzio-Biroli . He married the young German aristocrat Fey von Hassell on January 8, 1939, who was a special prisoner of the SS from 1944 to 1945 due to the involvement of her father Ulrich von Hassell in the attempted coup against the Nazi regime and Adolf Hitler on July 29, 1944 .

Detalmo Pirzio-Biroli was a cavalry officer in the Italian army from 1940 to 1944 and joined the resistance. After the Second World War, he completed his law studies in Rome. He is the author of several works on cultural anthropology and development cooperation.

Career

Detalmo Pirzio-Biroli was a member of the cabinet of the Italian Prime Minister Ferruccio Parri after the liberation of northern Italy . From 1946 to 1949 he was employed in the management of the family estate in Brazza, before he served as an advisor to the technical committee for the Marshall Plan for Italy from 1950 to 1954. From 1954 to 1958 he held the post of Supreme Secretary in the Italian State Secretariat for Foreign Trade. From 1959 to 1964 he worked for the Italian oil company ENI . 1964 Pirzio-Biroli was head of an EC mission in Senegal (1964–1972) and in Mali (1976–1980). After leaving the EU Commission, he worked as an economic advisor to the President of the Republic of Senegal (1981–1983) and led advisory missions in Africa on behalf of the IMF and the OSCE. He taught development cooperation at the University of Trieste.
