history

Dethleffs caravan from 1931 (faithful replica from 1974)

Today's Dethleffs GmbH & Co. KG, based in Isny im Allgäu , was founded in 1832 as Dethleffs KG. The main business purpose at the time was the manufacture and sale of whips . In 1923 the production of ski sticks was added. It was not until 1958 that whip and ski pole production was stopped due to the high demand for caravans.

The entrepreneur Arist Dethleffs was married to the artist Fridel Dethleffs-Edelmann . They had a daughter together, Ursula Dethleff . The then representative of whips and ski sticks did not want to do without the presence of his family during his business trips throughout Germany and designed a mobile studio with sleeping places for his wife, whom he married in 1931, and their little daughter, who was born in 1933 , which later became Dethleff's caravan became known, although this name is misleading because it is actually a single-axle caravan without a drive .

The vehicle was designed for three berths, an axle and two wheels with pneumatic tires . It could be attached to a passenger car or tractor commonly used at the time by means of a trailer coupling. It was 4,380 m long, 1,660 m wide and 2,050 m high. The interior of the trailer for motor vehicles was a bench, table, bunk bed and various shelves that could be folded out into a double bed.

During his business trips, Arist Dethleffs was asked where to buy this vehicle. The existence of the Dethleff residential car resulted in a demand for this object, which was relatively unknown in Germany at the time. As early as 1932, the first caravans similar to the Dethleffs caravan were manufactured for customers. In 1936 six people were employed in the production of the Dethleffs mobile home. Today's Dethleffs company developed from the idea of Arist Dethleffs and has been part of Hymer AG in Bad Waldsee since 1983 .
