Deuteragenia bifasciata ( Syn .: Dipogon bifasciatus ) is a hymenoptera from the family of wasps (Pompilidae).

features

The animals reach a body length of 5 to 9 millimeters (females) or 4 to 7 millimeters (males). The females' third antennae is significantly longer than the scapus and the discoidal cell 1 does not have a cloudy tip. In the male, the antennae are parallel on the underside and not bulged. The species is very similar to the other species of the genus Deuteragenia , for example the piebald wasp , and can hardly be distinguished from them in the wild.

Occurrence

The species occurs from Central , Northern and Eastern Europe to the Far East ( Japan ). The southern limit of distribution is in Europe in Northern Italy and Bulgaria . In the Alps it can only be found in the lowlands.

It settles in temperature-favored forest edges, bushes and open habitats with dead wood such as abandoned vineyards and orchards ; it can also be found directly in the settlement area in gardens. The animals fly in two generations from mid-May to mid-September.

Way of life

Females of Deuteragenia bifasciata make their nests in hollow stems, beetle holes in dead wood and cracks in walls. They prefer a passage diameter of 3.5 to four millimeters. The species is one of the few in its family that creates up to six cells in a row. The partition walls are made of various materials such as plant fibers, wood flour or insect parts and are three to eleven millimeters thick. They are covered with cobwebs. For this, the female uses bristles on the underside of the head. The nest is finally closed up to six centimeters thick, with larger parts and resin being stored in addition to cobwebs. The brood is supplied with a crab spider , on whose abdomen an egg is laid. Larger spiders are introduced into cells with females. The pupation takes place in a cigar-shaped, white cocoons , which contains at one end of the feces. The development from egg to hatching takes about 30 days.

Systematics and taxonomy

For a long time Deuteragenia bifasciata was assigned to the genus Dipogon as Dipogon bifasciatus . The genus Deuteragenia was introduced by Šustera in 1912, but from 1946 onwards it was regarded by many authors only as a subgenus of Dipogon . In 2012, Deuteragenia was rebuilt as an independent genus. Dipogon (Deuteragenia) bifasciatus was assigned as Deuteragenia bifasciata to this re-established genus.
