The German-French Year 2012 - 2013 was supported by France and Germany declared to the 50th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty to celebrate. Since 1963, the treaty has formed the basis of close Franco-German relations .

The aim of the Franco-German Year is to draw the public's attention to the close relations between France and Germany . The governments want to commemorate joint achievements in 50 years of the Élysée Treaty and give a commitment to the future of Europe . The main focus is on networking both civil societies even more closely and on strengthening young people's curiosity about the partner country.

history

On January 22, 1963, Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer signed the Élysée Treaty in Paris . Since then, Germans and French have celebrated Franco-German Day every year on January 22nd. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty , the German and French governments jointly founded the Adenauer de Gaulle Prize in 1988 . It honors personalities for their contribution to German-French friendship. On the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Élysée Treaty on January 22, 2003, the Franco-German summits that take place regularly were further institutionalized as Franco-German Councils of Ministers.

Events

Chancellor Angela Merkel and President François Hollande kicked off the anniversary year with a joint visit to the cathedral in Reims on July 8, 2012. They commemorated the “Reconciliation Mass” that Adenauer and de Gaulle held together in 1962. The German was opened -French year officially on September 22, 2012 in Ludwigsburg with a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of de Gaulle's speech to German youth. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Élysée Treaty, the city of Paris was able to present the United Buddy Bears exhibition in autumn 2012 at the foot of the Eiffel Tower , on the Champ de Mars .
