The German-Luxembourgish Schengen Lyceum (SLP for short) is a new, cross-border secondary school in Perl that was designed and supported jointly by Luxembourg and Saarland .

history

On behalf of the seventh Saar-Lor-Lux summit, a “Vision of the Future 2020” was drawn up for the greater region. This calls for the development of a new, large-regional school type. Representatives of the Luxembourg Ministry of Education, the Saarland Ministry of Education and the Merzig-Wadern district have drawn up a corresponding agreement as well as financial and administrative agreements for the project. Between June 30, 2006 and September 19, 2006, the Luxembourg government, the Merzig-Wadern district council, the Saarland state government and the German federal government approved the conclusion of the agreement.

On December 4, 2006, the Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker , the Saarland Prime Minister Peter Müller , the District Administrator of the Merzig-Wadern District Daniela Schlegel-Friedrich , the Minister for Education and Vocational Training Mady Delvaux-Stehres and the Minister for Education, Culture and Science Jürgen Schreier in the Roman Villa Borg the agreements.

The school started operations on August 27, 2007 with a total of 130 new students (100 Germans from Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, 28 Luxembourgers and 2 French) in the building of the former Extended Realschule Perl. Originally only three classes per class level were planned, but due to the high demand, five classes were set up per class level. The extension was completed in spring 2010; In 2011 the second construction phase could then be handed over to its use.

type of school

The Schengen Lyceum cannot be directly compared with other types of school , as it combines elements of both the Luxembourgish and the German (or Saarland) school system. Entry is possible for German pupils after primary school , for Luxembourgish pupils after the 4th or 6th grade, after completing the Luxembourg primary school. There are no formal transfers up to grade 9. From grade 7, following the example of the integrated comprehensive school, individual subjects are taught in courses differentiated according to performance. The school has a strong focus on modern languages and leads to the acquisition of German and Luxembourgish school qualifications.

All day school

The school is designed as a real all-day school . From 7 a.m., the pupils can stay there with supervision until the start of lessons. Lunch will be offered. In all grade levels the teaching time is 36 hours per week. Classes end three days a week at 4 p.m., otherwise at 1 p.m. After that there are offers for the students until 6 p.m. at the latest. In addition to the free offers of the school (homework supervision, working groups (AG)), there are chargeable offers from an independent provider.
