The German Fiber Holding GmbH is a 2011 based telecommunications company based in Borken , North Rhine-Westphalia . The company operates the expansion of FTTH fiber optic networks (fiber optics up to the apartment) and is a telecommunications service provider in the areas of Internet, television ( IPTV ) and telephony .

Field of activity

The company builds and operates its own broadband fiber optic network, which is laid down to the individual apartments, i. H. on the “ last mile ” is not dependent on the rental of lines from Deutsche Telekom AG . This is available to other telecommunications providers as an open network (so-called Open Access Network ). The expansion takes place in cooperation with the municipalities and focuses on the outskirts of large metropolitan areas. Before the expansion, the company carries out time-limited demand bundling. Only when a certain percentage of households in the potential expansion area sign a contract with Deutsche Glasfaser as a provider will the expansion take place. Citizens' initiatives are often set up to act as mediators between citizens, local politicians and the company.

As an Internet service provider, it markets Internet, TV and telephony services for private customers. In February 2017, according to the industry organization FTTH Council Europe , the company had 70,000 households connected to its network (Homes Connected) of around 235,000 households that could be connected to it (Homes Passed). In May 2019, according to its own reports, the company had 300,000 contract customers and around 500,000 households that could be connected. With regard to broadband coverage in rural areas, German fiber optics is now seen as an important opponent of Deutsche Telekom.

history

Deutsche Glasfaser was founded in 2011 by the Dutch private investment company Reggeborgh, which had already been active in the field of FTTH rollout in the Netherlands with its subsidiary Reggefiber a few years earlier and installed around 2.5 million fiber optic connections (30% of Dutch households ). Initially, the fiber optic expansion was mainly implemented in North Rhine-Westphalia , Lower Saxony , Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria .

Since 2015, the American investor Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts and Co. has been the majority shareholder with investments worth a total of 131.1 billion US dollars , alongside the Reggeborgh Group as a minority shareholder. This means that German fiber optics will have around 1.5 billion euros in investment capital for expansion in Germany over the next few years. In addition, funding should also be applied for. The company has been pursuing the expansion of fiber optic networks across Germany since 2016.

Deutsche Glasfaser is a member of the Federal Association for Broadband Communication , which is committed to the Germany-wide expansion of fiber-optic networks and fair competition in the telecommunications market, as well as the Association of Providers of Telecommunications and Value-Added Services .

In July 2017, Deutsche Glasfaser announced the takeover of Unser Ortsnetz GmbH. The Our local network brand will be abandoned and existing customers will be migrated to Deutsche Glasfaser technology.

In May 2020 the Federal Cartel Office allowed the takeover of Deutsche Glasfaser by the Swedish financial investor EQT and the merger of Deutsche Glasfaser with its competitor inexio Informationstechnologie und Telekommunikation GmbH , based in Saarlouis . The merged company would be the third largest fiber optic provider in Germany after Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone.
