The German war cemetery in Marigny is located in the commune of La Chapelle-en-Juger in the French department of Manche , twelve kilometers west of Saint-Lô . 11,169 German soldiers are buried in the cemetery, which bears the name of the neighboring municipality of Marigny , two kilometers to the southwest . These fell during the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944.
Temporary US War Cemetery
In 1944, 3,070 American soldiers were buried in the cemetery area, and between 1945 and 1946 they were transferred to the large American war cemetery of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer in front of the Omaha Beach landing site . A memorial stone near the entrance commemorates the soldiers of the American VII Corps .
Permanent German war cemetery
In 1957, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge relocated the remains of German soldiers who had previously been in a large number of small cemeteries in the region or in individual graves here. In 1958, the Volksbund began to design the cemetery. The cemetery is divided into five elongated grave blocks, which are surrounded by walls. The name, rank, date of birth and date of death of two soldiers are given on ceramic plates. Groups with larger crosses are evenly distributed over the area. The cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall. The entrance building is designed in the style of the churches of the region. The cemetery was inaugurated on September 20, 1961.
The fighting
The Allies built two bridgeheads at Sainte-Mère-Église and Utah Beach and cut off the Cotentin Peninsula in the Cherbourg area. During Operation Cobra, Marigny, La Chapelle-en-Juger and the surrounding communities were in the narrow corridor of the Allied first attack and were heavily bombed from the air at the end of July 1944. A very large number of German soldiers died.
