The name

The association was founded in 1957 as the "German Leper Aid Organization" and kept this name for more than 45 years. At the beginning of 2003, the association was renamed in order to include the focus on tuberculosis in its name. The abbreviation DAHW will continue to be used for better recognition.

Focus

Both diseases are caused by mycobacteria , treated with a combination of different antibiotics and mostly affect people whose immune system is weakened due to poor nutrition or poor hygienic conditions. Therefore, leprosy and TB are also referred to as “diseases of poverty”. In addition, DAHW "fights" rare diseases such as Buruli ulcer , Chagas disease or leishmaniasis . The focus of the work is on helping leprosy and tuberculosis patients in Asia, Africa and South America.
