The German Empire newspaper was in Bonn moved daily newspaper that the political Catholicism was close to.

history

The newspaper and the associated printing company were founded on December 1, 1871 - with the support of a “Committee for the Foundation of a Catholic Daily” - by the merchant and later publisher Peter Hauptmann (1825–1895) as a Catholic counter-foundation to the nationally liberal Bonner Zeitung . As the first confessionally bound daily newspaper in Bonn and beyond, it embodied a new type. The printing shop was set up in the former home of Professor Franz Xaver Dieringer (An der Sürst 5), which Hauptmann had acquired. From 1888 the publishing house was run by his son Carl Hauptmann . In terms of church politics, the newspaper was strictly ultramontane during the Kulturkampf , was close to the Center Party and consequently supported the position of the Catholic Church against the Prussian state. The naming as a Reichszeitung took place in protest against the accusation of patriotism. Due to her extremely uncompromising line, 19 trials for press offenses were brought against her and the members of the editorial team, who had to serve numerous prison terms, in the first five years of its existence. The number of subscribers rose from 2,100 (1,000 in Bonn) in 1872 to around 7,000 in 1880. Even after the end of the Kulturkampf, it remained an influential sheet of political Catholicism, but at times lost its importance and distribution considerably. In 1906 it was merged with the Bonner Stadtanzeiger and the Bonner Volkszeitung and now had 29,000 subscribers. After the November Revolution, the newspaper supported the idea of a Rhenish state . In early 1919 it was taken over as an official organ by the Center Party; after 1921 it was published by the former managing director of the Hauptmann newspaper publisher Johann Tinner (1867-1932) and from October 1, 1927 by Heinrich Köllen (* 1885), a newspaper publisher from Duisburg-Ruhrort .
