The German rubber boat ( DSB ) GmbH is a manufacturer of rubber boats and life rafts for shipping as well as special equipment such as watercraft for amusement parks . The company is based in Eschershausen in Lower Saxony .

history

The company was founded in 1931 by Hans Scheibert in Berlin. Initially, they were only supplied to the merchant marine, which as a result of SOLAS is forced to purchase inflatable boats in large numbers. In addition, the army found interest in these inflatable boats for its pioneer units, as did the Reich and Kriegsmarine .

After the Second World War , the production sites in Großschönau , Berlin and Grottau were in the Soviet occupation zone and abroad, which is why Scheibert re-founded the company in Eschershausen in 1951. After the founding of the German Navy , it became the main customer.

In 1961 the factory burned down at its new location . Continental AG then acquired a majority stake, and in 1981 it took over the company completely. At this point, a reorientation towards the civil sector began.

At the end of the 1960s, DSB was the first manufacturer of rigid inflatable boats with an aluminum hull. Until then, the hulls of RIB inflatable boats were mainly made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic and sometimes of wood. With the aluminum rigid inflatable boat in the program, the demand from military and commercial civil users grew.

After reunification , the former Großschönau site was repurchased in 1991. On July 1, 2001, the company was taken over by the British Survitec Group based in Dunmurry near Belfast . Survitec financed 90 percent of the company acquisition with outside capital, so that DSB had to pay for the repayment with its profits. This also meant that there were no business taxes. In 2001 the company employed 121 people in Eschershausen and 47 in Großschönau.

In 2003, DSB generated around 50 percent of sales from the sale of life rafts and had an export quota of 60 percent.

At the end of 2007 the Survitec Group announced the relocation of DSB production from Eschershausen to the People's Republic of China . Only a sales center and the production of custom-made products were to remain in Eschershausen. However, this plan was not implemented, but the basis for the future in the Weserbergland was strengthened by taking over the production and sale of products from sister companies of the group.

In 2008 the Augsburg balloon factory was taken over.

In 2015, 96 people were employed in Eschershausen.
