The German Association of Journalists ( DJV ) - Union of Journalists e. V. is the largest journalists' organization in Europe with headquarters in Berlin and Bonn. It has more than 30,000 members. The federal chairman has been the journalist Frank Überall since 2015 , the deputy federal chairman has been the radio journalist Conny Becker-Veyhelmann and the newspaper editor Wolfgang Grebenhof since 2019, and the treasurer is the freelance journalist Katrin Kroemer . The business of the federal association is managed by the lawyer Kajo Döhring . From 2003 to 2015 Michael Konken was chairman of the association. In previous years, Siegfried Weischenberg (1999–2001), Rolf Lautenbach (2001–2003) and Hermann Meyn were federal chairmen from 1989 to 1998. The DJV is a member of the International Federation of Journalists (IJF).

Self-expression and activities

The DJV describes itself as a combination of trade union and professional association . He sees himself as representing the interests of both permanent and freelance journalists from all media areas. They can also work in press offices and PR agencies as long as they work as a journalist. The criterion for DJV membership is full-time journalistic activity. In addition to classic collective bargaining tasks, the DJV is also committed to the freedom of the press and information, as well as the quality of journalistic training and further education. He speaks out on all media policy issues, especially in connection with freedom of the press. In 2006, the DJV placed a campaign on the future of journalism under the slogan “Journalisten 21” at the center of its work. In 2007, the press freedom situation at home and abroad was the focus of the work. The DJV is a co-signatory of the joint declaration of the data retention working group against the draft law on data retention . He is also part of the group of shareholders of the press supply founded in 1949 , a supply facility for journalists and media professionals. history

The association was founded in Berlin in 1949, but was then based in Bonn for many decades. In 2000 he opened a capital city office in Berlin and made Berlin his official seat again in 2005.

On September 11, 2007, the German Association of Journalists Berlin (a regional association of the DJV) filed for bankruptcy due to over-indebtedness . According to the insolvency plan , the regional association will be restructured and ready to act again from September 2008 . The DJV Berlin Sozialfonds GmbH, however, could not be restructured; it had to be resolved.

organization

There are 17 regional associations, one for each federal state, as well as an additional association that emerged in 2008 from the Brandenburg Journalists Association and the Association of Berlin Journalists. The members of the DJV can volunteer in their districts and state associations, including in the federal association. Numerous committees are available for this purpose. You can become a member of the respective state board or the seven-member federal board. The members have specialist committees open to collaboration as advisory bodies for the board members. They are divided into professional groups or media types and range from daily newspapers and freelance journalists to radio.

The DJV is independent of the German Federation of Trade Unions . Its journalists' organization is the German Union of Journalists in the United Service Union (ver.di).

Services

Like all professional associations, the DJV represents the interests of its members, supports them with information and advice and organizes meetings, congresses and round tables. He grants legal protection and offers discounted insurance. Job-specific services include issuing press cards, subscribing to journalist magazine and the DJV picture portal, a marketing platform for pictures. The DJV elaborates formulated principles for journalistic work, e.g. B. The guidelines for authorizing interviews and publishes them.

The journalist

The DJV has been publishing its members' magazine journalist since 1967 . The sheet was produced by Verlag Rommerskirchen from Remagen on behalf of the DJV until 2016. The journalist has been published by New Business since then .
