German warrior march

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Warrior March is a march by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 284). The work was performed for the first time on February 28 or March 8, 1864 in Vienna's Volksgarten .

Remarks

The march came about against the backdrop of the German-Danish War , in which Austria took part on the side of Prussia. On this occasion, Johann Strauss also composed the Season Quadrille (op. 283) and the Fraternization March (op. 287). The proceeds of the concert on February 28, 1864 went to benefit the Austrian soldiers wounded in the war. The first performance of the march was announced in large newspaper advertisements for the concert on February 28th, and at the concert 200 copies of the march printed by the music dealer Spina were distributed to the ladies present. Nevertheless, it is not uncontroversial today whether the first performance of the march actually took place that evening, because according to the notes of the conductor Josef Strauss the first performance should not have taken place until March 8th. The work was not a great success and soon disappeared from the repertoire of the Strauss Orchestra. In 1899, Adolf Müller used parts of this work in the second act of the operetta Wiener Blut , which he had compiled based on motifs by Johann Strauss (son) .

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 2 minutes and 18 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
