The German Olympic Institute (DOI) was a research institution that dealt with topics related to the Olympic movement. In 2007 the institute became part of the German Olympic Academy Willi Daume .

history

The German Olympic Institute was founded on November 17, 1990 by the National Olympic Committee Germany (NOK). It was opened on May 24, 1993, the 80th birthday of Willi Daumes , on whose initiative the establishment of the institute declined. The DOI's area of responsibility included “scientific research and documentation of the Olympic movement”. The first chairman of the institute after its founding was Herbert Haag from 1991 , who held this position until 1994 and was on  leave from his professorship for sports education at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . Haag later stated that the idea was to run the institute as a “think tank for Olympic topics”. However, the original plans were slowed down by Berlin's failed application for the 2000 Summer Games.

The German Olympic Institute was located in a villa on Kleiner Wannsee 6a in Berlin; five other cities had also applied to be the home of the institution prior to the establishment of the DOI in 1990.

The German Olympic Institute was financed and supported by the National Olympic Committee of Germany, the Berlin Senate , the AOK , federal funds and specialist sports associations, among others . It came under fire for its high cost.

At the end of 2004, the institute moved from Berlin to Frankfurt am Main after the Berlin Senate cut its support considerably and the state of Hesse offered rooms in the “House of Sports”. The National Olympic Committee of Germany and the German Sports Confederation were also located there.

On May 4, 2007, the German Olympic Institute was transferred to the newly founded German Olympic Academy Willi Daume.
