history

In the 1950s, the mechanization of agriculture in Germany and Europe clearly picked up speed. The Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG (KHD) responded by upgrading product range and introduction of Deutz D series , which was presented in 1958 to the public and quickly became the success series of the Cologne tractor and engine manufacturer, and from 1959 to 1964 in the KHD- Works was produced.

Although the D was 40 competed to succeed the 514er series, the physical difference is the three-cylinder - 514er tractors initially low. The most important difference to the 514 tractors was the use of the air-cooled diesel engine of the type F3L 712, which has an output of 35 hp (26 kW) in the basic model. The S version of the D 40 was intended to upgrade the tractor and was therefore a little better equipped than the basic model and was equipped with an engine of 38 hp (28 kW). KHD presented the D 40.1 and D 40.1 S models as early as 1959. They are optically modernized versions of the D 40. These new tractor types differed significantly from the outside of the old 514 series. The tugs received the characteristic design features of Deutz at the time, the wide hood grille and the brass rosette in the front of the hood.

In 1962, KHD introduced another D 40, which received the official type designation D 40 L and was equipped with the TW 35 gearbox (8/2 gears). The D 40 L is based on the two-cylinder D30 and has been upgraded with the three-cylinder F3L 712 engine with 35 HP (26 kW). This resulted in a lighter but still more powerful mid-range tractor that was produced in parallel with the D 40.1 and D 40.1 S. The external similarity between the D 40 L and D 40.1 has led to mix-ups since then, even though they are two completely different types of tractor. From 1964 KHD installed the new diesel engine of the type F3L 812 in the D 40 L and also D 40.1, which in the version for the D 40.1 S develops 40 hp (29 kW). The D 40.1 S was therefore one of the heavy mid-range tractors in the mid-1960s.

With the introduction of the Deutz 05 series (1965), the D 40.1 was taken off the market. The D 40 L was replaced by the D 4005 , which was later supplemented by the types D 4006 and D 4007 .

technology

The Deutz D 40 is a frameless block-type tractor with a rigid rear axle and a sprung front swing axle. Is driven tractor of an air-cooled Reihendreizylinder- four stroke - swirl chamber - OHV - wet sump - diesel engine of the type F3L 712 with Bosch -Einspritzanlage having a displacement of 2550 cm 3 has and 35 hp (26 kW) at 2150 min -1 guaranteed. The engine of the D 40 S develops 38 hp (28 kW) at 2300 rpm . In the last year of construction (1964) the then new air-cooled F3L 812 was used. In this version, which is relatively rare today, the engine has an output of 40 hp (29 kW), which makes the D 40.1 S the most powerful variant of this type of tractor. With the F3L 712 and F3L 812, the torque is transmitted via a single-plate dry clutch from Fichtel & Sachs to an unsynchronized seven-speed pusher gear with three additional reverse gears; the first gear is intended as a crawler gear. The driving range is from 0.6 km / h to 20 km / h. Only the rear wheels are driven; the rear axle differential can be locked. Steering is done with a ZF Gemmer steering , braked with a drum brake system on the rear axle that can also be used as a steering brake. For power take-off, the D 40.1 has a transmission PTO that can be switched over to operation as a road PTO. The drive of the mower has a slip clutch . The equipment of the Deutz D 40.1 also includes two headlights with high beam, low beam and parking light, a horn , a flashing system, as well as a socket for the trailer lighting and hand lamp. The optional special equipment of the Deutz D 40.1 includes a Baas front loader, a Fritzmeier hood, a second fender seat and a cable winch .
