geology

The Devil's Bridge was formed over a long period of time by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean . The erosion of the limestone was promoted by the influence of the north-east trade winds , which drive the tides of the Atlantic on the exposed rock formation. In the vicinity of the Devil's Bridge there are numerous blowholes from which water fountains regularly shoot up.

history

Near the Devil's Bridge lanes were a prehistoric , Indian discovered settlement. The traces of settlement suggest that the area around Devil's Bridge was used as a place to live and fish by some of Antigua's earliest residents at the time.

The name of the bridge goes back to the time of slavery in Antigua. According to the stories of the islanders, numerous slaves threw themselves from the Devil's Bridge into the Atlantic Ocean and drowned due to their hopeless situation. This story gave the rock formation the name Devil's Bridge, as allegedly the devil induced the slaves to commit suicide and claimed them after their death. Although there is no reliable evidence for this incident, it still gives the natural bridge its name.
