from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dextro Energy GmbH & Co. KG is a German company in the food industry . Dextro Energy (until 2002 Dextro Energen) is also the name of the main product of this company.

The company is based in Krefeld and has been part of the Zertus GmbH in Hamburg since 2005 . Under the brand name of the same name, it manufactures products in various formats, consisting almost entirely of dextrose (grape sugar, glucose). In addition to sugar, it also contains flavors and other food additives. The release agents contained in the products use magnesium salts of fatty acids ( E 470b ).

history

The company's history begins in 1927 with a white dextrose powder that was manufactured by Deutsche Maizena GmbH (later Deutsche Maizena Werke AG) under the name Dextrose Purum or nutrient sugar and was sold through pharmacies . Deutsche Maizena was a subsidiary of the US Corn Products Refining Corporation (CPC) and was renamed Bestfoods in 1998 and integrated into the Dutch Unilever Group in 2000. In 1929 the brand name Dextropur was established and prescribed by doctors as a tonic . In 1935, Dextro Energen was launched in the form of a cube and was marketed effectively as "official competition catering " at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

On March 5, 2005, the Dutch food company Unilever sold the company to the Hamburg sugar company Zertus GmbH (until 2002 the company was named Sugar Refinery Tangermünde Fr. Meyers Sohn GmbH). In 2005 about 160 people were employed at Dextro Energy and generated an estimated turnover of up to 30 million euros.

criticism

In February 2016, the German consumer magazine Öko-Test was able to determine chocolate chlorate during an examination of the energy bar Dextro Energy Sports Snack . The company then checked all the cleaning agents and disinfectants used and all raw materials and clearly traced the contamination back to the raw material soy protein crispies. In addition, two different, genetically modified soy varieties were found in the crispies.

On March 16, 2016, the Court of Justice of the European Union (EGC) in Luxembourg confirmed a decision by the EU Commission, according to which Dextro Energy is not allowed to make any health-related claims regarding the consumption of glucose (judgment of March 16, 2016, Az.T-100 / 15). The Commission did not allow health claims such as contribution to energy-producing metabolism, support for physical activity, contribution to normal muscle function, to be submitted, as it recognized a contradicting and confusing signal to consumers. The information recommends the consumption of sugar , but does not explain the risks of increased sugar consumption.
