Dhemaji is a city in the Indian state of Assam .
The city is the capital of the Dhemaji District . Dhemaji has the status of a Town Committee . The city is divided into 4 wards . It had 12,816 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 6514 were men and 6302 women. Hindus make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 96%. Muslims form a minority of around 2%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 91.5%, well above the national average. 16.6% belong to the Scheduled Tribes .
