Dhubri ( Assamese ধুবুৰী IAST Dhūbrī [ ˈdʱubri ]) is a city in the Indian state of Assam . It is located about 290 kilometers west of Guwahati on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra not far from the border with Bangladesh . Dhubri had 63,965 inhabitants at the time of the 2001 census and is the capital of the Dhubri district .

Dhubri used to be an important trading center and had a port that served in particular as a trading point for jute .

On April 30, 2012, a ferry accident on the Brahmaputra occurred near the city, in which more than 100 people were killed. It is one of the most serious shipping disasters in South Asia's recent history.
