Diocese of Ely
The Diocese of Ely ( Latin Dioecesis Eliensis ) is an Anglican diocese in the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury of the Church of England with its seat in Ely . It was a Roman Catholic diocese until the English Reformation .
history
The diocese of Ely was established on November 11, 1108 by Pope Paschal II from cession of the diocese of Lincoln . Bishop Hervey chose the church of the Benedictine monastery of the city of Ely as the cathedral .
The last Roman Catholic bishop, Thomas Thirlby , was deposed by Queen Elizabeth I in 1559 . Bishop Thomas Thirlby died at Lambeth Palace in August 1570 .
The Catholic diocese of Ely was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Canterbury as a suffragan and was divided into about 140 parishes .
